Fed Cuts Borrowing Costs for Second Time This Year During Economic Uncertainty

The United States monetary authority reduced interest rates on midweek, representing the second rate cut in the current year during economic turbulence originating from the government closure and tariff policies.

Move Comes at Extraordinary Moment for Central Bank

The decision to cut the benchmark interest rate by a 0.25% to a span of 3.75% to 4% comes at an unprecedented moment for the Fed. The institution has been under immense pressure to cut rates even with ongoing price increases.

Fed Statement Notes Job Market Shifts

In a statement, the Fed said that the unemployment rate had gone up but stays modest. “Employment growth have slowed,” the release notes. “Price increases has moved up and remains somewhat elevated.”

Government Shutdown Hinders Fed’s Job

The ongoing federal government shutdown, now among the lengthiest in US history, has also complicated the Fed’s job. Collection of key financial statistics has been suspended without a timeline as employees at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are on leave during the shutdown.

Data Gap Impacts Policy Decisions

The Federal Reserve usually analyzes labor statistics to assess employment trends, such as the count of employment gains added to the market and the present unemployment rate. The last jobs report was published in the beginning of last month, before the closure, and gave a somewhat gloomy overview of the employment scene in the previous month.

The figure of positions created to the economy in August was down by over 100k since the spring, and unemployment rose to four point three percent – the highest since three years ago.

Alternative Reports Show Continued Slowdown

Though BLS was set to publish last month’s job market report in early October, it halted its publication once the shutdown began. Private payroll firm a leading payroll processor indicated recently that the business segment eliminated thirty-two thousand jobs in last month, a indication that the job market is still decelerating.

“Both the supply and demand for workers has fallen significantly,” Fed chair the Fed chairman stated earlier this month, which he had earlier said comes from immigration and tariff policies.

Inflation Report Reveals Gradual Rise

Though BLS’s employment data has been paused, the agency still released its price statistics for last month that indicated that prices are rising, although slowly. Costs increased three percent over the last year, the highest since January. In April, the yearly price increase was 2.3%, the lowest it has been since three years ago. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is two percent.
