Zohran Mamdani Promises a 'Dawn' for The Big Apple in Inaugural Speech
During an inauguration day in office, Zohran Mamdani pledged to “transform” the metropolis, promising “a new era” and an audacious beginning to his term.
A Historic Mayor
The 34-year-old democratic socialist, who was a virtually unknown state assemblyman, has become the city's first mayor born in Africa. He also made history by being the first to be sworn in using the Qur'an.
“A opportunity of this kind comes rarely and even more uncommon is it that the people themselves whose hold the controls for transformation,” Mamdani stated.
Defying advice to temper hopes, the mayor was emphatic: “I will do no such thing. The only expectation I seek to change is that of limited ambitions. Beginning today we will govern with courage and vision.”
Steering by Democratic Socialist Convictions
Mamdani openly embraced his core beliefs. “I was elected as a democratic socialist and I will lead as one. I will not forsake my ideals for concern of being called extreme,” he said to loud cheers.
The swearing-in was a two-part event, beginning with a late-night oath-taking in a disused subway station. He was formally sworn in on the steps of city hall by Vermont independent senator Bernie Sanders, who spoke of Mamdani's election as a victory over powerful interests.
A Sweeping Policy Agenda
Mamdani now begins one of the most demanding jobs in American politics, with a plan including:
- Universal childcare
- Free buses
- A rent freeze for approximately 1 million households
- A trial program of municipally-operated grocery stores
The projected $10 billion price tag of these services may prove difficult to fund. Mamdani has vowed to tax more heavily the richest residents and corporations. However, as a municipality under the authority of the state government, he will require the cooperation of Governor Kathy Hochul.
Navigating External Challenges
The new mayor also faces skepticism from some members of the Jewish community concerned about his past comments regarding Israel. Tensions were revealed during the transition when a senior aide stepped down over controversial past social media posts.
Mamdani has moved to ease these concerns by convincing Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to remain, preventing the appearance of losing a Jewish police chief.
On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has called Mamdani a “socialist” and warned of withholding government money. Despite this, a prior encounter between the two was reportedly unexpectedly cordial.
The Basic Tests of Governing
In the end, New York mayors are judged on their success in providing essential functions: trash collection, reducing the rodent problem, repairing potholes, and making sure smooth subway service.
Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams highlighted his team's public safety record, citing record low numbers of homicides and gun violence in 2025, with 301 homicides reported.
As his term starts, Mamdani and his wife will relocate from their Astoria apartment to the historic mayoral residence. The previous occupant offered a unusual warning about a reputed friendly ghost in the home, which reportedly only haunts those who do not act to “do right by the city.”
Mamdani ended his speech with a direct statement: “The work has only just begun.”
